Vitamin C is essential for the production of proteins, collagen and elastin, which strengthen arteries, bones, teeth, cartilage, and other tissues.  It helps the body absorb iron and helps the body deal with stress.  Unlike most animals, human beings are unable to manufacture their own Vitamin C.  Animals that make their own Vitamin C are able to increase production in response to stress, infection, and exposure to toxins. Diet alone may not provide adequate amounts of Vitamin C , especially in times of stress or ailment.

A study¹ conducted by the NYS Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities has demonstrated High levels of oxidative stress associated with autism.  Vitamin C is highly effective in promoting health and raising glutathione levels. Bioflavonoids such as Quercetin work together synergistically with Vitamin C.  Bioflavonoids greatly enhance Vitamin C’s bioavailability and effectiveness.  Both Quercetin and Vitamin C help protect  the brain, tissues, and genetic material from oxidative damage due to exposure to toxins.   Increased plasma vitamin C has been correlated with lowered blood lead levels, although the mechanism for this is not well understood.

Vitamin C also helps the body make neurepinephrine, an important neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters affect mood, behavior, and  brain function.  In addition, Vitamin C is used in the synthesis of Carnitine, which is essential for transporting fat into the mitochondria, where it is converted to energy.  Vitamin C also affects the glutaminergic system, used for signaling in the brain, and the brain’s response to the mood and stress hormone Dopamine.

Spectrum Support I is a metabolic and neuronutrient support liquid vitamin formula designed for children and adults who do not need the greater intensity of the Spectrum Support II and III products. START-UP SUGGESTIONS

We suggest that those starting with Spectrum Support I give a trial of Spectrum Support II with PAK after a few months, to see if the child could benefit from the extra nutritional support. Children can then transition over time to SSII and SSIII over time, as desired. The suggested dosage is based upon specific ratios of milligrams of the nutrients to kilograms of body weight and can be adjusted for anyone from 25 to 200 pounds. Introduction or transition to Spectrum Support I is done gradually, over a period of 16 days to allow the body to adjust to the new
formula and the nutritional support it provides.

ABOUT THE TWO KINDS OF SPECTRUM SUPPORT II

Spectrum Support II comes in two varieties: the original formula (P5P), and this formula here, the Spectrum Support II with PAK.

P5P and PAK are two different forms of the vitamin B6, a crucial nutrient for those on the spectrum.

The ONLY difference between the two forms of Spectrum Support II is that the original P5P form contains the active P5P (pyridoxal-5-phosphate) form of vitamin B6, and the PAK form contains the pyridoxine alpha ketoglutarate (PAK) form of vitamin B6 instead.

Pyridoxine must be converted to P5P for the body to use it, which means that the body gets several times as much effective vitamin B-6 per milligram of P5P than it does from PAK or other pyridoxine forms.

As you may have read, vitamin B6 can be extremely helpful to many children. However, depending on the individual child’s readiness to absorb nutrients and unique body chemistry, some can take P5P with excellent results, and others do better starting out with the less-active PAK form and working up to P5P if appropriate as their bodies can utilize it better. If your child is in the early stages of treatment, or if you do not know if they tolerate vitamin B-6 well, we suggest starting out with Spectrum Support with PAK, and working up to the P5P formula gradually.  You can also purchase trial sizes of both formulas, and see which one seems to be the best fit.
