Vitamin C is essential for the production of proteins, collagen and elastin, which strengthen arteries, bones, teeth, cartilage, and other tissues.  It helps the body absorb iron and helps the body deal with stress.  Unlike most animals, human beings are unable to manufacture their own Vitamin C.  Animals that make their own Vitamin C are able to increase production in response to stress, infection, and exposure to toxins. Diet alone may not provide adequate amounts of Vitamin C , especially in times of stress or ailment.

A study¹ conducted by the NYS Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities has demonstrated High levels of oxidative stress associated with autism.  Vitamin C is highly effective in promoting health and raising glutathione levels. Bioflavonoids such as Quercetin work together synergistically with Vitamin C.  Bioflavonoids greatly enhance Vitamin C’s bioavailability and effectiveness.  Both Quercetin and Vitamin C help protect  the brain, tissues, and genetic material from oxidative damage due to exposure to toxins.   Increased plasma vitamin C has been correlated with lowered blood lead levels, although the mechanism for this is not well understood.

Vitamin C also helps the body make neurepinephrine, an important neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters affect mood, behavior, and  brain function.  In addition, Vitamin C is used in the synthesis of Carnitine, which is essential for transporting fat into the mitochondria, where it is converted to energy.  Vitamin C also affects the glutaminergic system, used for signaling in the brain, and the brain’s response to the mood and stress hormone Dopamine.

Spectrum Support I is a metabolic and neuronutrient support liquid vitamin formula designed for children and adults who do not need the greater intensity of the Spectrum Support II and III products. The Spectrum Support Minerals are chemically bound to amino acids to enhance cellular energy production. These minerals are extremely well absorbed, utilized, and tolerated, more so than minerals bound to sulfate, oxide, carbonate, or chloride.  All our mineral formulas do not contain iron or copper, as many individuals on the spectrum have issues with metals.   Supplementation of copper and iron should be based on individual need, working with a medical practitioner. START-UP SUGGESTIONS

Spectrum Support I is a good start-up choice for the following:

1. People with attention or focus difficulties, who not have more involved digestive or neurological challenges.
2. A person on the autistic spectrum who is on the way to recovery and no longer needs higher doses of the B vitamins.
3. An individual who has problems taking B vitamins in higher doses.

We suggest that those starting with Spectrum Support I give a trial of Spectrum Support II with PAK after a few months, to see if the child could benefit from the extra nutritional support. Children can then transition over time to SSII and SSIII over time, as desired. The suggested dosage is based upon specific ratios of milligrams of the nutrients to kilograms of body weight and can be adjusted for anyone from 25 to 200 pounds. Introduction or transition to Spectrum Support I is done gradually, over a period of 16 days to allow the body to adjust to the new
formula and the nutritional support it provides.

B vitamins are crucial for healthy nervous system function, energy production and digestion. Our B-complex provides B vitamins in biologically appropriate dosages, designed for stress and energy support. One of the most common doctor recommendations to women under stress is to take a B-Complex vitamin. This formula is a perfect choice. With a small once-a-day dose, this formula fits easily into a busy lifestyle.  We recommend that you take a multivitamin supplement with minerals daily in addition to our B-Complex, to giive your body other needed nutrients.

All of the B vitamins work synergistically, and each has different functions in the body, so it’s best to take a full B complex rather than just a few individual vitamins. The body cannot store large amounts, so B vitamins must be continuously replaced in the body. Alcohol, tea, coffee, sugar and some medications deplete B vitamins, and they can also be run down due to stress.

SUGGESTED USAGE:

Adults take 1 tablespoon early in the day, with food. Child’s dose is 1/2 to 1 tablespoon per day. May be divided into 2-3 doses for ideal absorption. Take last dose before 4pm if sleep disturbance is seen.

Please start B-Complex at a low dose and increase gradually over a period of 1 to 2 weeks, to give the body time to adjust. People often report feeling a little nervous or restless when they increase their B vitamin dosage. This effect should pass in a few days. Everyone has different needs, so reduce your dosage or split it into multiple doses with meals if excessive restlessness or sleeplessness is noted.

Children on the autistic spectrum often do well on a higher dose of B vitamins than other individuals, and may require the full adult dosage. Please consult your health practitioner as needed.

NOTE:

B vitamins are water soluble, so the body will excrete excess amounts.  B vitamins can turn urine a bright fluorescent yellow, which is perfectly normal.

ABOUT THE TWO KINDS OF SPECTRUM SUPPORT II

Spectrum Support II comes in two varieties: original formula, and Spectrum Support II with PAK. P5P and PAK are two different forms of vitamin B6, a crucial nutrient for those on the spectrum.

The ONLY difference between the two forms of Spectrum Support II is that the original P5P form contains the active P5P (pyridoxal-5-phosphate) form of vitamin B6, and the PAK form contains the pyridoxine alphaketoglutarate (PAK) form of vitamin B6 instead. Pyridoxine must be converted to P5P for the body to use it, which means that the body gets several times as much effective vitamin B-6 per milligram of P5P than it does from PAK or other pyridoxine forms.

As you may have read, vitamin B6 can be extremely very helpful to many children. However, depending on the individual child’s readiness to absorb nutrients and unique body chemistry, some can take P5P with excellent results, and others do better starting out with the less-active PAK form and working up to P5P if appropriate as their bodies can utilize it better. If your child is in the early stages of treatment, or if you do not know if they tolerate vitamin B-6 well, we suggest starting out with Spectrum Support vitamins with PAK, and working up to the P5P formula gradually.  You can also purchase trial sizes of both formulas, and see which one seems to be the best fit.
